Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL) is an Indian multinational two-wheeler and three-wheeler manufacturing company based in Pune, Maharashtra. It manufactures motorcycles, scooters, and auto rickshaws. The company has plants in Chakan (Pune), Waluj (near Aurangabad), and Pantnagar in Uttarakhand. The oldest plant at Akurdi (Pune) houses the R&D center 'Ahead'. Bajaj Auto is the world's third-largest manufacturer of motorcycles and the second largest in India. It is the world's largest three-wheeler manufacturer.
Purpose
Bajaj Auto Ltd has IPR assets that are of high value, the process of managing the same is well defined and maintained in a conventional method. This process includes record-keeping of invention disclosures, claims, documents, emails, excel sheets, drawings, write-ups, certificate of grants, deadlines i.e., filing, examination, hearing & annuities, and many more tasks received from the Intellectual Property Offices & other sources by In-house Counsels.
Further, the company also engages the services of Patent Attorney Firms for various legal activities to be compiled during the life cycle of IPR Assets with the Intellectual Property Office.
To address the shortcomings of the present mixed system which uses spreadsheets and a combination of record-keeping and storage as mentioned above in different standalone computer systems and servers does not allow optimum means for retrieval & analysis of records. BAL required digitalization of its patent business process and record using a state of art technologies-based Patent Management Software for its portfolio of 400+ patents which would be a single platform to manage the complete IPR process integrating with all stakeholders at one place. Over and above the external attorney firms can also be provided with agreed levels of limited access for maintaining deadlines and docket documents for various patent applications filed by them.
After the implementation of Iolite Patent Management Software, the complete work process of pre-filing of Patent Applications such as submission of Invention Disclosure Forms (IDF) by inventors along with the documents related to invention and prior art search, Freedom-To-Operate and invalidation search and complete workflow processing has become hassle-free, seamless and transparent. The Inventors can submit their IDFs with just a few clicks, while the Group Leader analysis the same for approval or rejection and assigns the same to Patent Team for further course of action. Hence, back and forth of email communications and a series of long email threads has been eliminated.
